Guided Tour of Padua

Program

Guided tour of Padua: faith, science and art

An ancient university city and an important spiritual center, Padua surprises visitors with the richness of its history and the harmony of its urban spaces. Accompanied by one of our licensed tour guides, you will discover a lively and cultured city where faith, science and art have coexisted for centuries.

The tour begins by crossing the monumental Prato della Valle, one of the largest squares in Europe, leading to Piazza del Santo and the majestic Basilica of Saint Anthony, one of the largest churches in the world and a major international pilgrimage site. Inside, art and devotion blend through chapels, relics and masterpieces. A curious anecdote: for centuries, pilgrims have touched the saint’s tomb in silent prayer.

From the Basilica, the route continues along the historic Via del Santo, passing the square dedicated to the mythical founder Antenor, and reaching the prestigious Palazzo del Bo, seat of the University of Padua, one of the oldest in Europe. Here you will visit the extraordinary Anatomical Theatre, the oldest permanent anatomical theatre in the world.

The tour continues through the historic market area with Piazza delle Erbe, Piazza dei Frutti and the impressive Palazzo della Ragione, before reaching Piazza Eremitani, an important cultural hub.

A highlight of the visit is the Scrovegni Chapel, with Giotto’s celebrated fresco cycle, considered one of the masterpieces of Western art (advance booking required – entrance fee €8.00 per person), and the nearby Eremitani Church.

Additional Information

The city of the Saint, a university city for 700 years, where Giotto and Giusto de Menabuoi worked as well as Pisanello, is the capital of the Venetian mainland culture, dynamic and modern, but ancient and cultured. Founded by the Trojan prince Antenor, fleeing from his destroyed hometown, Padua has evolved following the pressing rhythm of History, which has seen it involved in the foreground in every era. From a large commercial center in Roman times to a free medieval commune, it was a bargaining chip for Napoleon Bonaparte and found itself the scene of the Armistice of the First World War. A very important center of partisan resistance during the Second World War, it is today a modern city, home to one of the most prestigious Italian universities.
