Guided tour of Mantua
Program
Mantua: a journey into the greatness of the Gonzaga family
Elegant and intimate, Mantua preserves the legacy of one of Europe’s most fascinating dynasties: the Gonzaga, who ruled the city for nearly four centuries and played a leading role in Renaissance politics and culture, closely connected to the major European courts. Here, art is not merely decoration, but a powerful tool of prestige and wonder.
Accompanied by licensed tour guides, you will discover a surprising city where every square tells a story and every palace hides absolute masterpieces. From the monumental Ducal Palace, a city within the city, to the illusionistic frescoes by Andrea Mantegna and Giulio Romano, Mantua enchants visitors with its refined harmony.
A curious anecdote: in the famous Camera degli Sposi, Mantegna painted an oculus that seems to open onto the sky — a clever way for the Gonzaga to impress their guests, leaving them literally… amazed.

Additional Information
Inhabited since 2000 BC, what we know today as Mantua is a mirror of the history of Italy and humanity.
Built by the Etruscans, it was subjected to Roman domination, giving birth to the parents (“mantuani per patria ambedui”) of the great Virgil. Seat of great religious councils, it became a Free Municipality and was the scene of the Manzonian descent of the Lanzichenecchi, until it passed under the wing of the Habsburgs, French domination and finally the Kingdom of Italy. It was the site of the first democratic administrative elections after the end of the twenty years of fascism.
In short, a city that has lived history as a protagonist.
