Additional Information
Austrian Verona refers to the period in the history of Verona in which the city was under the rule of the Austrian Empire, from 1815 to 1866 when Veneto was annexed to the Kingdom of Italy.
While the population suffered Habsburg domination, seeing their personal freedoms limited and having to change some socio-economic aspects of their lives, the city was increasingly fortified, becoming the most important “stronghold” of the fortified quadrilateral, where the constant and oppressive presence of an imposing Austrian garrison weighed heavily.
